I wrote recently about
how little I knew about science. I'm a proud member of the right-side-of-the-brain club: when I look at a cloud, I don't think about how it got there, what type of cloud it is, and whether it might bring a storm. These are all important things that help society at large, I'm sure, but I'm happy to let others think about these things while I look at a cloud and wonder if it looks like a dog, a lion, or more than likely, a monster.
Luckily, there is one field of science that unites the dreamers and the thinkers, and this iPhone app seems to be made for both types of people.
Your first screen gives you current Solar System information. Look how nice it looks:
Then it's all up to you. You can find yourself on Earth, then rotate the planet and look at the view from other locations:
You can do a search for your favorite constellations and get information about them, and you can even point to the sky (during day or night) and find actual star/planet positions.
It's absolutely beautiful, and it's full of information as well as dreamy vibe (even just spinning Earth was enough to blow my mind, personally). And these pictures don't do it justice, because they can't show how alive it seems in real life.
I'm trying to only review stuff that is relevant to parenting, and I do believe this one fits that category. It's a fun teaching/sharing tool, as well as possibly being a good back-to-school app.
Now, although this app currently costs only $2.99 for the iPhone version, it's $2.99 more than a lot of apps. It's amazing--and I'm the same way--how difficult it is to spend three bucks on something that cool. I do recommend it, though, for anyone who has been able to overcome the "I will not spend a dime on apps, so help me God!" mentality.
If you want to do something else with those $2.99 but still want the app, I got one code to review this up and I still have 4 codes left, so leave me a comment with an email/Twitter handle, and I will give you the code. If more than 4 people want the app, I will choose randomly.
Oh, and this giveaway must end by Monday, because the codes can only be redeemed by September 6th or they won't work.
