The Good Men Project

The Good Men Project

Like many blogging parents, I get emails about products and issues that may be relevant to the blog. I ignore most of these emails for two reasons. First, I can't turn a blog that was originally about other blogging fathers into a way for me to get stuff. And second, I'm rude.

But when I got the email about The Good Men Project, and specifically about the book and DVD of men telling their stories as a "discussion about what manhood means today," it did seem the perfect fit for this blog. After all, by looking at fathers' blogs and by trying to find a common theme, I've been doing the same thing the founders of The Good Men Project have been doing.

Just like the ordinary people featured in the book and in the DVD, the ordinary bloggers I've been writing about share the same confusion about the changing times and, at least subconsciously, the same knowledge that defining fatherhood and manhood is up to them.

The book and the DVD offer no simple truth. We change because society is changing because the economy is changing and because of social evolution and because things are simply the way they are.

See, all I can offer is more confusion.

But with the confusion comes something else, which is what The Good Men Project and this blog are trying to show: that no matter how confusing it all is, we're not alone. And while we struggle to understand, at least we know we do everything we can do be the best we can be for ourselves and for our children.

Just a few more notes:

The DVD does include swear words. Personally, I don't mind, especially when these words are said in the context of an honest interview. But in case you do mind, you're probably happy to learn it now and not while watching the DVD with the extended family.

When you finish looking at the website, take a look at the project's Facebook page and at the co-founder's Twitter page.

And finally, comment here or email me if you have any questions about the book or the DVD.

Oh, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
